Mount Vernon Police Commissioner David Chong gave up his post Friday so a teenager could live out his dream.

Scott McMurray, a 19-year-old from White Plains, was behind the wheel of a police cruiser living out his dream to one day become a police officer. McMurray is suffering from a rare form of cancer called desmoplastic small round cell tumor. He is in the fight for his life and intends to beat cancer.

Police Officer Joe Russo, a family friend, helped make McMurray?s dream of being commissioner for the day possible.

?I think if anyone is strong enough to beat this it would be Scott and I've known him since he was 6. He's a strong kid,? says Russo.

McMurray was sworn into his new post by Mount Vernon Mayor Clinton Young. However, Chong joked that McMurray should not get too comfortable in his new job. Members of the Mount Vernon Police Department wish McMurray well in the future and look forward to him getting a job with them when he graduates SUNY-Delhi.
