Port Jervis police are crediting the actions of a 13-year-old boy for saving his mother from his father, who was apparently in a murderous rage.
Chief William Worden says Patrick Loria, 44, disappeared for several hours Wednesday after he broke into his wife's car window during a domestic dispute. Worden says Loria returned that night in a violent rage.
Police say the boy was able to hold him off at the front door while his mother hid in the basement and called 911.
"He was going to kill his wife, and he was holding two large knives," says Chief Worden.
Worden says officers heard screaming and yelling from inside the home and saw Loria through the window with a butcher and steak knife. Police made their way inside with guns drawn when Loria allegedly barricaded himself in an upstairs bathroom, blocking access to his kids – the 13-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl.
"We couldn't get past the bathroom to get to the children. The suspect was in between us," Worden says.
Police say Loria put his kids in a bedroom where he allegedly told them to stay while he searched for their mother. He eventually surrendered and his wife and children were reunited.
Loria is charged with multiple felonies, including attempted murder. He's being held on $100,000 bail as his case is heard by a grand jury.
