Ossining Police Chief Kevin Sylvester was recognized Wednesday with the prestigious 40 Under 40 award from the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino and Ossining Mayor Victoria Gearity both nominated him for the award.

"My success is really driven by the good work of the people who work with me," Chief Sylvester said. "So it's really an opportunity to talk about all the great work this department does. And it really belongs to the people on patrol."

Chief Sylvester is a Marine, a graduate of Pace law school and was Westchester County's youngest police chief when he was sworn in nearly four years ago at age 35.

"Chief Sylvester has been a leader here in our community, community policing online and offline, and he's a leader among his peers, and that's what this is celebrating," Gearity said.

Scarpino issued a statement saying in part, "Kevin is a true leader who believes in justice and who is always willing to collaborate to keep Westchester safer and more secure. He represents the Gold Standard of 21st century law enforcement."
