Republicans in Westchester are beating back against the notion that their party is in shambles following another round of Democratic victories on Tuesday, but admit that President Trump has been a problem.
In Tuesday's special election, Democrat Shelley Mayer won George Latimer's state Senate seat by double digits, only months after he beat incumbent Republican Rob Astorino by as many points.
The Democrats also have a 13-4 majority on county Board of Legislators.

Shannon Powell, one of the founders of the left-leaning grassroots group, Indivisible Westchester, believes voters are turning out in force, and voting Democratic because they fear for the future of this nation.

“Donald Trump's presidency is an energizing force in getting people involved,” says Powell.

Former Yonkers Republican City Councilman John Murtaugh says the rise of the Democrats shouldn't and doesn’t mean Republicanism in Westchester is over for good.

“The Republican party…continues to be strong and viable and they continue to put out good candidates,” says Murtaugh.

Murtaugh admits, it’s going to be difficult for his party to separate themselves from the White House during the age of Trump.

“Republicans right now not only have to run against their opponent, in New York, they have to run against Donald Trump,” said Murtagh.
County Democrats hope to continue their winning streak in November during hotly contested races. That includes the race for governor and the fight for control of the state Senate.
