Three newborn babies were among five people stabbed Friday at a home in Queens that was apparently doubling as a neighborhood nursery.
Police say two adults were also stabbed at what is being described as an overnight day care and birthing center operating out of a home.
The city's Department of Health told News 12 in a statement: “After the horrific incident at Mei Xin Care in Flushing, the Health Department is investigating the facility. Although it is still early in the investigation, the department can confirm that there was no home day care license for the location. NYPD is the lead on this investigation."
The injured infants range from just 3 days old to 1-month-old. The day care was being run from a three-story home.
The suspect was reportedly found in the basement, unconscious, with slash wounds to her wrist. Police say they were self-inflicted wounds. Some of the mothers of those babies were there at the time of the incident.
Nine babies were in the home in total. Two knives were recovered from the scene. Police say all of the injured were removed to area hospitals in critical, but stable condition.
Charges against the unnamed suspect are pending.
