Copy-NYC truck attack suspect believed to have NJ connections
A man accused of deliberately running down a group of people in a truck near the World Trade Center in Manhattan Tuesday is believed to have some New Jersey connections.
Law enforcement officials said Sayfullo Saipov, 29, purposely drove down a bike path and ran down people in a rented Home Depot truck. At least eight people were killed, and nearly a dozen more were injured. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called it a terrorist attack.
Saipov, who is an Uzbekistan native, is believed to have been living in Passaic County recently and may have rented the Home Depot truck from the store in the city of Passaic.
Numerous law enforcement officers arrived at the Passaic Home Depot Tuesday evening. Investigators surrounded a white Toyota minivan with Florida plates, which is believed to be Saipov’s personal vehicle. The van was parked near the Home Depot’s rental trucks.
Authorities were also investigating an address on Genesee Street in Paterson, which is believed to be Saipov’s last known residence. Saipov previously lived in Ohio and Florida.
NYPD officials said that after Saipov allegedly ran down the victims, he jumped out of the truck and waved around a paintball and pellet gun. He also reportedly yelled “Allahu Akbar!” which is Arabic for "God is great.”
Officials said a police officer shot Saipov in the abdomen. He underwent surgery and was expected to survive.
The New Jersey PBA posted a message on Twitter that stated the FBI was looking for tips related to the attack. Anyone with information is urged to call 1-800-225-5321.
