Local police are out in force this week making sure drivers and pedestrians stay safe at railroad crossings.

Norwalk police say they have started their train track safety campaign called "Operation Clear Track."

They're looking for drivers and pedestrians who go across tracks, even after gates have come down.

Police say about 1,000 have been killed at track crossings since 2016, and many more have been hurt, including one man in Redding last year.

"Follow the traffic signals, it’s a way to stay safe. Certainly stay off the train tracks. Often times you cannot hear the trains coming if you're walking on the tracks, a train could possibly strike you," says Lt. Terry Blake.
