New Roc security tight a year after melee, gunfire
Security was tight at New Rochelle's New Roc City on Easter Sunday, a year to the day after a melee that ended in gunfire and arrests.
Last year, hundreds of teenagers became unruly and wreaked havoc at the entertainment complex due to overcrowding. A massive riot broke out, which spilled to a nearby Metro-North station. Hundreds of officers dressed in riot gear faced off against the teens.
Shots were fired and in the end, six people were arrested and three were injured.
Officials are ensuring that history doesn't repeat itself. People who walked into New Roc Sunday were greeted by more than 24 guards posted at entrances and in common areas. New rules are also in effect."We have controlled the access to the facility so that we make sure that no one comes in with mal intent, a weapon or anything like that," said Joe Apicella, of Cappelli Enterprises, which has been overseeing the changes. "They will be checked, they will be questioned, they will be checked for their age."Anyone under 18 must now be accompanied by an adult and occupancy has been limited to 1,200 people to prevent overcrowding. There's also a minimum spending amount of $10 to play in the arcade.
Management hopes the changes will deter crime and reassure the public that New Roc City is safe for families.
