New Hempstead school closed for second time for not having running water
A New Hempstead school was closed for the second time for not having running water.
The Health Department posted that Ateres Bais Yaakov Academy of Rockland was closed last week after officials said the school had no water. County officials say the students were without water after it froze in the portable tanker.
The academy on Summit Park Road is a school to over 400 girls.
The academy was using a portable water tanker, but the water froze during last week's frigid temperatures.
This isn't the first time the academy had been without water. Back in October, the county closed the school for operating without its own water, electricity or a working fire hydrant.
Ramapo inspectors originally gave the school a temporary certificate of occupancy.
"The Ramapo building inspectors have routinely done things like this. It's very frustrating when point of fact these other levels of government who have direct responsibility to tend to this --- and we're taking up the cause to defend these children...this has got to stop,"  says Rockland County Executive Ed Day.
News 12 learned on Tuesday evening that a new water tanker was delivered to the school.  Officials say the Health Department has lifted its order.
