Multiple fire companies responded to a massive four-alarm building fire in Yonkers Tuesday evening.

The fire broke out at a six-floor brick residential building located at 1 Garret Place, which is on the border of Bronxville. It was built in 1927.

Heavy, black smoke could be seen billowing through the roof, even hours after firefighters first responded to the scene.

Fire officials say the flames broke out in a space between the ceiling and the roof of the building. They utilized a "surround and drown" strategy to try and stop the flames from the inside.

A total of 64 apartments are in the building.

The super tells News 12 that the fire started at a corner apartment on the sixth floor and spread.

The Red Cross is now helping an estimated 130 families who have been displaced by the fire.

Several roads were shut down as a result of the fire.

631 Tuckahoe Road in Yonkers operated as Red Cross reception center providing food and mental health support. The reception center transitioned to a shelter overnight.

There have been no injuries reported. Yonkers firefighters, though, retrieved an unconscious cat from an apartment. EMS units began providing life-saving measures, and eventually the cat returned to consciousness. It received further treatment getting oxygen tent and IV, but is now in good health.
