Mt. Vernon man gets 37 years to life for revenge shooting case
A Mount Vernon man was sentenced Friday to 37 years to life for a gang-related revenge murder. Shamei Brown, 31, shot and killed Raymond Harris outside the Hartley Housing complex and shot Harris' cousin in the face in October of 2005. The cousin survived. Police say Brown went out looking for revenge for the murder of his brother, popular club promoter Dasheau Brown. It later turned out that Harris had nothing to do with the murder. Investigators arrested 17-year-old Rodney Alston Jr., who was eventually convicted and sentenced to 20 years to life for killing Dashaeu Brown.
Police say Dashaeu Brown was a leader of the Bloods gang. The murders sparked fears of gang-land shooting throughout the city. Shamei Brown was convicted of 14 separate misdemeanor charges and one felony. Prosecutors described him as a menace to the Mount Vernon community.
