Mount Vernon residents divided on proposed luxury high-rise in Fleetwood area
Residents in the Fleetwood section of Mount Vernon are divided on a proposal to build a luxury high-rise on the corner of West Broad Street and Fleetwood Avenue.
It's currently home to an empty drugstore and a local supermarket, but developers want to turn it into an 18-story, luxury apartment tower and retail space with 249 units.
Angela Freeman, who owns the nearby Milestone School, says she thinks the high-rise would be beneficial for the community. "I think it's time people understand all the positives that Mount Vernon has," says Freeman.
However, other residents are concerned about traffic and where they would go for grocery shopping if the Metro Fresh market is torn down.
The Mount Vernon City Council, Planning Board and Architectural Review Board are currently studying the project. Developers hope to break ground on the high-rise sometime early next year.
