Mobile 12 monitors road conditions in 4th March nor'easter
Mobile 12 is monitoring road conditions during Wednesday's nor'easter, the fourth this month.
Freezing rain and ice pellets fell on and off throughout the morning, but snow began to pick up by the afternoon in Long Beach. After sundown, snow accumulations picked up pace, covering Nicolls Road in Stony Brook within minutes.
Whiteout conditions also plagued the South Shore, leaving visibility extremely poor on Sunrise Highway near Route 111.
Fast snowfall appeared to continually cover the streets quickly after plows moved through around 10 p.m.
Throughout the afternoon and evening, most major roads remained clear. As time went on, side streets and main roads began to see notable accumulations.
News 12 passed accidents on a handful of different roads and highways.
Officials warned the evening commute would be a disaster and urged people to avoid driving if they could.
News 12 meteorologists say a total of 6 to 12 inches of snow is expected Islandwide.
