Mass remembers mother murdered 10 years ago
Exactly 10 years ago today, a White Plains mother was murdered in a parking lot in broad daylight.
Today, the family of Connie Russo-Carriero honored her memory and is calling for action to protect others.
Russo-Carriero's sons attended a Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in White Plains to mark the day a decade ago when Philip Grant stabbed their mother to death while she was walking to her car in the parking lot next to the Galleria Mall. "We've always been such a tight-knit family and it feels like 100 years. It feels like yesterday," says Jonathan Russo.
Grant, who was a homeless ex-con, is serving 25 years to life for her murder.
The family filed and won a civil lawsuit against the city of White Plains claiming there was insufficient security. "The trial highlighted call buttons, better lighting, cameras. There is no price you can put on safety and the amount of changes ... progress should never stop," says Michael Russo.
White Plains is appealing the ruling.
