March planned to retrace steps of murdered immigrant
Westchester's Hispanic community is planning a march to call attention to the unsolved murder of a Guatemalan immigrant.
Latino leaders vowed to walk from the last place Rene Perez was seen alive in Mount Kisco to the spot where his body was found in Bedford. Jose Holguin says he decided to plan the six-mile march to bring awareness to Perez?s murder. Activists say the march is also designed to show their outrage at the police?s handling of the Perez case.
The march will start on Sunday at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Mount Kisco. It will go past the police department and will later make a stop at the Laudromat where Perez made a 911 call to police on April 28. The group will end the march at Byram Lake Road in Bedford where Perez was found lying on the side of the road. He died a short time later from severe abdominal injuries.
Monday, the group Hispanics Across America met with the U.S. Attorney?s office in Manhattan, which is also involved in the murder probe. They are calling for federal prosecutors to completely take over the investigation, which also involves the Mount Kisco Police Department. Three Mount Kisco police officers were reportedly the last people to see Perez the night he died. No charges have been filed against any of the officers, but they have been put on desk duty.
