The owners of small retail businesses across New Jersey say that they are working hard to turn a profit this holiday season.
New figures for November show that sales are up by .8 percent. Something that is great news for New Jersey retailers.
But with so much competition, some small business owners say that they have to find ways to stand out from all the rest.
The Hungry Hound in Somerville specializes in handmade dog treats.
“You can’t go on Amazon and buy our treats. You can’t go to Walmart,” says owner Penny Milligan. “So we have a very loyal customer base.”
Milligan says that Christmas time is especially important because that is when the store makes a third of its annual sales.
This is also true for the owners of Just Jersey in Morristown. The shop sells crafts, food and other items all made by New Jerseyans.
“Our niche involves more than just the products. It’s about the people behind them and their stories and passions and paths to their creative ventures,” says owner Paul Miller.
The retailers say that they are hopeful to make a large profit this year as there are four weekends before Christmas day. This has not happened in five years.
