The Long Island Rail Road is having a very bad year, according to the Comptroller’s Office.
So far in 2018, the railroad has had the highest number of train cancellations in at least a decade. The LIRR has averaged 141 trains canceled each month.
That's nearly triple the amount recorded in 2012.
Those figures come from a newly released report from the state Comptroller’s Office.
According to the report, on-time performance has “further deteriorated, averaging 89.9 percent through August.”
"They are masking how bad it was," says Peter Haynes, president of the LIRR Commuter Campaign. "And even though it appears worse from their own numbers, it was many times worse in reality. And that's why commuters are upset. It affects their jobs, it affects their livelihood."
Mitch Pally of the MTA board says the new LIRR president is making changes. But Pally admits there is no immediate fix and says the MTA's changes take a while to implement and fund.
"I'm hopeful that the next couple of months you'll see a gradual improvement," says Pally.
