Kiryas Joel officials are responding to News 12's inquiries after viewer video captured apparent classes in session at a private school, despite the state's mandate ordering them closed.
Kiryas Joel School District Superintendent Joel Petlin says services for children at the Bais Rochel school are being carried out for prayer and other religious activities, permitted under Gov. Andrew Cuomo's executive order.
Phase 2 allows houses of worship to reopen at 25% capacity.
A spokesman for Gov. Andrew Cuomo tells News 12 that "Schools were closed by Executive Order and will require an Executive Order to reopen. We are currently working on guidelines for schools to then develop and submit reopening plans to the State. Until then, no school -- public, private or other -- can reopen, with an exception for in-person special education classes."
News 12's calls to the county executive, Health Department and state police have been not been returned.
