Internal probe launched after woman's jail cell death in Mount Vernon
Mayor Ernie Davis says an internal investigation is being launched into the death of 42-year-old Raynette Turner, who was found dead in her Mount Vernon jail cell last week.
"We want to discover the truth to make sure that we've done everything we could have done to avert this tragedy," Davis says. "We're looking at the protocols, we're reaching out to all the legal enforcement agencies."
The timeline leading up to the mother of eight's death is under heavy scrutiny by the state and by Westchester District Attorney's Office officials. Attorney General Eric Schniederman is also considering a formal investigation.
Police say Turner, who was awaiting a hearing on a shoplifting charge, vomited shortly before she was returned to her holding cell on Monday. But sources say she didn't receive any additional medical treatment, despite the fact that she had complained of feeling ill and was hospitalized the day before.
Police Commissioner Terrance Raynor says Turner was discovered dead at around 2 p.m. Monday, and that a camera was trained on her cell. Part of the investigation is looking into when she was last checked on.
Turner's family says she had a history of high blood pressure.
Rayor says he is optimistic the investigations will eventually clear his department of any wrongdoing and that Turner's death will be ruled a tragedy.
Turner's autopsy was inconclusive. Investigators are awaiting toxicology and biology reports.
