A badly injured pit bull found in a Yonkers dumpster and believed to have been used in illegal dog fighting matches is on the road to recovery.

The pit bull, which has been named Oscar, was found about two weeks ago. Authorities say the animal was left for dead in the trash after a long abusive career as a bait dog. Oscar was found with the body of an already dead dog.

SPCA Law Enforcement Chief Ken Ross says Oscar was dehydrated, suffering from hypothermia and had lost a lot of blood due to numerous puncture wounds. Oscar has since been vaccinated and is on a daily dose of antibiotics.

The pit bull will need to undergo temperament testing for eight days before it can officially be adopted. Ross says there is hope Oscar will be adoptable, as they've been able to hand feed him and introduce the dog to new animals and people

"All the signs are pretty positive," he says.

The SPCA is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.
