ICE detains White Plains woman at Syracuse bus stop
Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents detained a White Plains woman for nearly a week after stopping her at a bus station in Syracuse, her lawyer says.
Lissette Rodriguez, a 22-year-old graduate of White Plains High School, says she was awaiting a bus in Syracuse Thursday when Border Patrol officers demanded to see her documents.
"I told him I am in the process of getting my papers," she says, adding that the authorities treated her "like a criminal."
ICE held her for four days before a supervisor reviewed her papers and let her go.
"They were racially profiling in the bus station," says her lawyer, Jessica Young, of the Make the Road New York advocacy group. "Lissette has no criminal convictions and was not committing any crimes at the time she was detained."
Young says Rodriguez should have never been detained by ICE.
According to Young, her client is approved for and awaiting a special immigrant juvenile visa. But now the attorney says her client may see a delay in an application to get her green card because of the detention.
"They say they are only targeting the criminals, and that is not true," Young says.
Rodriguez is about to graduate from Bryant & Stratton College in Syracuse with a degree in networking technology.
"I'll be the first one in my family to have one," she says.
Customs and Border Protection officials say Rodriguez was detained because she didn't have immigration documents that would allow her to legally enter the United States.
