Homeless people violate Cuomo's order in Spring Valley
Some homeless people in Rockland County are bucking Gov. Andrew Cuomo's order for them to be sheltered as temperatures plunge below freezing.
Before the order was announced, News 12 cameras watched as a group of homeless immigrants huddled under the Route 59 overpass in Spring Valley prepared a warm, late-morning breakfast of pasta and beans. It was prepared in a makeshift kitchen covered with rotting garbage, across the stream from the blankets they used as bedding.
A day after Cuomo's mandatory shelter order, the situation was pretty much the same. It's a disappointment to gas station owner Zeshan Srnissar, who says he hoped the order would rid him of a problem he's been dealing with for nearly a decade.
A spokesperson for the Rockland County executive's office tells News 12 that they have no plans to remove anyone who doesn't request help, as Executive Ed Day feels that mandatory sheltering may violate civil rights.
Rockland is the only county in the state without a full-time shelter for singles.
