New York is already poised to set a record-high level of flu cases this season.
The state Department of Health says there were 17,233 confirmed flu cases reported last week. That is the second-highest weekly total since the 1998 to 1999 flu season.

Doctors at Syosset Hospital-Northwell Health say they're seeing patients with both strains of the flu come through the emergency room.

“We've seen a good amount of flu A and flu B this year, I would say about equal,” says Dr. Andy Lu.

State officials say a total of 106,824 cases have been reported in New York, including three flu-related pediatric deaths. On the national level, the CDC says 92 children have died in the U.S. because of flu activity this season.

Doctors say the best line of defense is getting a flu shot.

“It's not too late to get a flu shot,” says Dr. Lu. “We always recommend anyone 6 months and older to get a flu shot.”

Doctors say other ways to help stop the spread of the flu are frequent handwashing and disinfecting frequently touched objects and surfaces.
