Friends mourn victim of alleged DWI crash
Friends gathered Thursday to mourn a woman killed in a car crash by an alleged drunken driver.
Reyda LaMadrid, of Harrison, and husband Edgar Lopez were delivering papers Monday morning when their car was struck by an SUV driven by Erik Refvik, an off-duty firefighter. Police say Refvik, 34, had a blood alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit at the time of the crash.
LaMadrid, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene. Lopez, 49, remains at Westchester Medical Center in serious but stable condition.
Friends say LaMadrid owned Inca and Gaucho Restaurant on Westchester Avenue in Port Chester.
"You hear about these things all the time and you say oh, poor person, poor family, but when it happens to one of your own, you really feel it," said Camila Buse, a family friend.
LaMadrid leaves behind a daughter, a student at Westchester Community College, as well as a son, a student at Harrison High School.
Revfik has been charged with criminally negligent homicide and DWI. He was released from Westchester County Jail Wednesday night after posting $25,000 bail.
In 2003, Revfik pleaded guilty to DWI following a Manhattan arrest. He allegedly avoided jail time by agreeing to participate in an alcohol treatment program.
