Flatlands man sentenced to 20 years in wife's slaying
In an emotional day in court, the husband of a Flatlands woman was sentenced in her murder.
Marie Loiseau, 63, was found dead in her Avenue J home in September 2017. Her husband, Desmoulins Loiseau, accepted a plea deal and pleaded guilty in February.
The Brooklyn District Attorney's Office says Desmoulins told detectives that he got into an argument with his wife and strangled her.
On Friday, Desmoulins was sentenced to 20 years in state prison, with five years of post-release supervision until he is deported back to Haiti.
Marie Loiseau's daughter and cousin claim Desmoulins plotted her death for a long time in order to take her home in Haiti. They also called her killer a "monster."
Family members said in court that Marie did not even want to date her future husband, rejecting all of his advances, but he relentlessly pursued her, waiting for a weak moment.
Through a Creole interpreter, Desmoulins was able to address the court, claiming he loved his wife and would never forget her death for the rest of his life. Family members in the room scoffed at his statement.
The judge also didn't believe Desmoulins' statement, calling it "laughable."
Marie's family say they plan to try and move forward, even though they say she was a pillar of their family.
