A house fire Friday morning in North Patchogue left a woman dead and her daughter with serious burns.

The flames broke out around 9:45 a.m. on Ohls Street.

Police say the mother, 65-year-old Elisa Doughty, and daughter, 34-year-old Kristle Doughty, lived in an illegal basement apartment where the fire started.

The fire chief says the mother was trapped downstairs. First responders found her dead when they arrived on scene. Witnesses reported screams coming from the basement.

Authorities say the daughter was discovered on the first floor and suffered second-degree burns on nearly 20% of her body. She was taken to the burn unit at Stony Brook University Hospital. Authorities believe she may have been trying to rescue her mother.

A neighbor says she watched in horror as the woman was brought out of the home, crying and her hands red.

Officials say three other people inside the home managed to get themselves out safely.

There's no word on what caused the fire, but authorities say it appears to be accidental.

At this point, no charges are being filed in connection with the illegal apartment.
