Several Westchester nonprofits at risk of terrorist attacks will receive funding to bolster security.
The Department of Homeland Security is allocating more than $500,000 to seven local organizations. The funds are part of the Urban Area Security Initiative.
The list includes six synagogues and a children's hospital, which the government has said have received or are likely to receive threats.
Some of the organizations include Blythedale Children's Hospital in Valhalla, which was recently evacuated due to a bomb threat. It will receive nearly $80,000. Young Israel of New Rochelle will get a $100,000 grant and the Jewish Community Center Mid-Westchester will also benefit.
Beth El Synagogue Center of New Rochelle is also on the list for federal dollars. "We're pleased with that," said Executive Director Irwin Davison. "We have applied twice in the past," said Davison who plans to use the money to invest in surveillance technology.
Rep. Nita Lowey helped secure the funding. In a statement, she said she is pleased with the result.
