The family of an alleged shoplifter who died of cardiac arrest after police used a Taser on him in Greenburgh say they are still looking for answers surrounding his death.
A vigil was held Monday for Jonathan Maldonado in Hartsdale where he died two months ago.
Back in November, police say they used a Taser to subdue Maldonado after he was accused of stealing a cellphone at the Best Buy in Hartsdale. Moments later, Maldonado went into cardiac arrest. He died at the hospital.
Police say they were told by eyewitnesses that Maldonado was seen ingesting packets of a substance before the altercation, but family members deny the claims.
Attorney Randolph McLaughlin says the family is still largely in the dark about why he died or if Greenburgh police officers did enough to save him.
"We want to know why we can't get the information. Why are they not releasing the audio tapes, the video tapes? Why is that information not available to the family?" his family asks.
Maldonado's death is being investigated by the state Attorney General's Office, but his family points the finger of blame at the police officers. They say Maldonado was slammed into the ground face-down while officers sat on his back.
Family members vow to keep fighting until they get the answers they feel they deserve.
"I just want it to be thorough, I want it to be accurate, want it to be not rushed for any reason," says Maldonado's mother, Nancy Khader Maldonado. "There's a lot of players in this, I just want it to be accurate."
The three officers involved were placed on modified duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
Maldonado was the nephew of newly elected Yonkers City Council President Mike Khader.
