With a winter storm bearing down on the region, DPW crews across the Hudson Valley are preparing for messy and slippery roadways today.
Officials tell News 12 that since there hasn’t been much snow this winter, yards have plenty of salt and sand to spread along the roadways.
Crews began pre-treating the roads Monday in anticipation of what's coming later on this morning, and that includes putting down special brine mixture they use to help melt snow and ice when it begins to fall.
While 1 to 3 inches of snowfall isn’t a lot, the possibility of icy roads could be a real problem. DPW trucks are expecting to be spreading out a lot of salt and sand more so than they will be plowing. "The question at this point is when does it turn over to freezing rain, sleet and mixed precipitation which then becomes an ice scenario for us," says Yorktown Highway Supervisor Dave Paganelli.
Officials say they are expecting the morning commute should be normal but that it’s the drive home that will likely be a problem. "If you don't have to be out, don't be out, I always think it's safer at home if there's no reason to be on the roads," says White Plains Highway Superintendent Angelo Finateri.
