Cops out in full force to prevent holiday tragedies
State, county and local police will be out in full force Monday in Westchester and Hudson Valley in an effort to prevent holiday tragedies.
State police aggressively patrolling the Tappan Zee Bridge and New York State Thruway will be a common sight on New Year?s Eve. Troopers say their number one priority is to keep the more than 50 miles they watch as safe as possible.
County police have set up various checkpoints to get drunk and intoxicated drivers off the roads. Police in Westchester say they have arrested a record number of drunk drivers this year and expect to add to that total on New Year?s Eve.
The legal blood-alcohol limit in New York is .80. However, drivers close to that amount could be in trouble. ?You might go to jail and you might have your car impounded. If you had more than one beer you shouldn't drive tonight," said Sgt. Brian Hess of the Westchester County police.
Rest stops along the Thruway will be handing out free coffee for tired drivers.
