A funeral was held Monday for a young Yonkers woman who lost her lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis last week.
Hundreds of family members and friends turned out for the funeral of 22-year-old Annie McMahon, whose story caught the attention of many celebrities, including Taylor Swift, last month.
McMahon’s Mass was held at Annunciation Church in Crestwood, where McMahon’s father says she attended elementary school and was a cheerleader.
Many who attended the funeral said it was a celebration of life, not death.
“She was a light. She still is. She will be with us forever,” said Luke Dougherty, a family friend.
McMahon died Thursday after two double lung transplants. Unfortunately, a third surgery wasn't possible.
Purple ribbons with McMahon’s initials on them adorned trees outside the church where the funeral was held. Purple is the color of cystic fibrosis awareness.
McMahon is survived by her mother, father and three sisters.
