City: Mudslide victims out at least two weeks
A team of engineers is monitoring a massive mudslide in Yonkers that forced more than 100 seniors out of their homes.
City officials say 109 residents at 95-97 Walsh Road could be out of their homes for over two weeks. With heavy rains predicted for this weekend, engineers are concerned that the situation could become more unstable. State officials say they will be responsible for repairing the retaining wall behind the building while the city will focus on making sure the building is secure.
Fire officials said Thursday that clearing all the mud and debris is a slow process. At one point, they had to pull all the crews back because the retaining wall shifted, and they were worried about it coming down.
Fire officials say a leaky pipe from a building up on Ashford Avenue looks to be the cause of the problem. That pipe is being repaired.
No one was injured in the slide. Dozens of the displaced residents are staying with family or at two hotels where the city has provided rooms.
More than 50 are being assisted by the Red Cross because they need extra help with financial assistance and medical care.
