A crop grown in New Jersey could now be in the crosshairs of a possible trade war.
China has threatened a 15 percent tax on imported soybeans as a form of retaliation against President Donald Trump, who has proposed a tariff on Chinese aluminum and steel.
Many soybeans are grown in New Jersey
“It’s all talk and rhetoric right now,” says farmer Paul Hlubik. “It’s really hard to predict anything.”
Hlubik grows 800 acres of soybeans on his farms. The beans are often used to make soy milk, tofu, pet food and other products. He says that he will plant more of another group later this spring if the soybean market looks to be in jeopardy.
“I have plenty of time between when the fields dry out and we start planting,” Hlubik says. “We can adjust our acreage, and we can grow more corn and less soybeans.”
Soybeans are a more-than-$40 million-a-year industry in New Jersey.
China has also threatened tariffs on more than 120 imports from the United States, including certain fruits and vegetables.
