Child dies, mother hospitalized in Croton
A 6-year-old girl has died in Croton and her mother is clinging to life after they were found unconscious at their home.
Police say David Carr found his daughter, Lacey, unconscious and unresponsive at her mother's home at 144 Hastings Ave. on Sunday afternoon. The child's mother, Kathleen Dymes, 51, was also found unconscious. The father and mother do not live together.
Carr called 911 and first responders brought both of the them to Phelps Memorial Hospital, where Lacey later died. Dymes is being treated at the hospital.
There is no word yet on the cause of death. No arrests have been reported.
When asked if the incident was a botched murder-suicide, Croton police said, "At this time there is no indication. We're looking into it."
News 12 has learned that Dymes, who lived in the home with her own father, is a registered nurse. According to the New York State Professional Misconduct Enforcement web page, she was suspended for one year after admitting to stealing demerol from her employer back in 2002. There are also reports that she was convicted of a DWI in 2012.
Lacey was a first-grader at Carrie E. Tomkins Elementary School.
The superintendent of schools, Dr. Edward Fuhrman, wrote to parents, saying, "We are extremely saddened to hear about the loss of this student. Our counselors and support services will be available for students, parents and staff for as long as needed as we mourn and cope with the loss of such a precious life."
