Suffolk County acknowledged Tuesday that data belonging to residents may have been exposed during a cyber intrusion on Sept. 8.
County Executive Steve Bellone released a statement saying in part that the county will notify any person whose data may have been compromised.
Bellone said anyone whose data was compromised will be offered free identity theft protection services.
Images that surfaced on social media appeared to show cyber criminals threatening to post sensitive information including county court records and residents' personal information.
Suffolk County added that it does not have a number of people who may have had their data compromised at this time.
Bellone also announced Tuesday that the county submitted a formal notification of a data breach to the attorney general's office.
