Police in Port Chester found a rental car Tuesday they believe was used by the men suspected of holding five illegal immigrants captive for money after they were smuggled into the country.

According to police, five South American men paid the smugglers $10,000 in exchange for shelter and other amenities in the United States. Authorities said they entered the country from Mexico earlier this month and stayed with the suspects in a Haseco Avenue home for five days.

A black Toyota RAV 4 police believe was used by the alleged smugglers was found just two blocks from the house.

The five illegal immigrants, who were allegedly starved and beaten, said at one point that their captors threatened to cut off their fingers with pruning shears if they didn?t hand over more money. The victims were able to flee, but only two went to the authorities. Police said the other three will avoid deportation if they come forward to help in the case.

Police have arrested 22-year-old John Ernest Guerrero, of Texas, and are looking for an accomplice who is said to be armed and dangerous. A third man may be involved.

The car is being processed as evidence.
