Bronxville puts best foot forward to honor student
Bronxville put its best foot forward Saturday to honor a 21-year-old student who died tragically while she was away at college.
Hundreds of people came out for the first annual Kathryn Welling Memorial Run. Welling died of carbon monoxide poisoning in a bedroom in April 2005 while a student at Miami University of Ohio. She was one of three students found dead inside the burning home.
Since Welling's death, her friends from Bronxville High School, where she graduated, decided to set up a run in her memory. Welling's tragic death has turned into an inspiring event and her friends say it is exactly the way she would have wanted it.
Welling was on the track team at Bronxville High School. Her dedication to running seemed to have inspired so many others as they crossed the finish line.
Welling?s mother Helen was overwhelmed by the scores of people who showed up to run and walk in honor of her daughter, Katie. ?There are no words to express gratitude on keeping Katie?s sprit alive. All I ever wanted is that she never be forgotten,? Helen Welling said.
Organizers say Saturday?s run in memory of Katie Welling was the first and will become an annual tradition. The event raised $20,000, which will go to Bronxville School Foundation.
