Breakdown of candidates in race for governor
Election Day is right around the corner, but before heading out to the polls, it's important to know where each candidates stands on important issues.
While incumbent Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Republican Rob Astorino, Libertarian Michael McDermott and Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins will all be on Tuesday's ballot, there are a number of key differences to be aware of between them.
Cuomo's goal for the economy is to cut taxes and reverse the stigma that New York is the tax capital of the nation. According to his campaign website, "Lower taxes meant more economic growth, which would lead to more revenue for targeted, job-creating investments."
Astorino also wants to reduce taxes. His website outlines ways to reduce them for all taxpayers, to reduce or hold government spending for the next four years and to reduce state debt.
Meanwhile, McDermott says he wants to get rid of regulations that many people and businesses face.
Hawkins is pushing economic democracy, hoping to make living wages and incomes available to all.
Public safety is also a hot topic. In his time as governor, Cuomo enacted the Safe Act, which is considered one of the toughest and most comprehensive gun-control laws in the country. If elected, both Astorino and McDermott say they would seek to repeal it.
When it comes to education, three of the candidates wish to get rid of or replace Common Core. Cuomo's website states that he has already worked on reforms to protect students and parents from the faulty implementation of the program.
