Authorities say a majority of drivers in wrong-way crashes are impaired by either drugs or alcohol.
There have been more than a dozen wrong-way crashes in Westchester and the Hudson Valley in less than a decade. The most recent incident happened Friday when police say Diego Caceras, 35, struck a Dodge Durango carrying a family of six. The victims were taken to Westchester Medical Center and are expected to be OK.
In July 2009, Diane Schuler was drunk and high when she got on the Taconic State Parkway heading the wrong way. Her minivan carrying her 2-year-old daughter and three young nieces struck a vehicle carrying three Yonkers men head-on. No one survived that crash.
A 2015 crash killed NYPD Detective Paul Duncan, of Hartsdale. His car was hit by a wrong-way driver who was drunk on the Sprain Brook Parkway. Eren Moreano, of Yonkers, is currently in prison for manslaughter.
Just last August, a woman was heading the wrong way on the Hutchinson River Parkway. She died and others were injured.
There have been efforts over the years to install better signage along ramps to some parkways.
