The artwork of New Jersey artist Corinne Antonelli is being featured on a United Airlines jet and it has its own New Jersey twist.
Antonelli’s piece features the historic Red Mill in Clinton Township on one side and the Statue of Liberty and the New York City skyline on the other. She says that she feels special that her artwork will be viewed from 30,000 feet in the sky.
“I think there’s only like five or six other people in history that have painted an entire aircraft,” she says.
Antonelli was chosen as one of two winners in United's “Her Art Here” competition. The contest offered female artists the chance to have their work painted on an airliner - one representing California the other New York and New Jersey - two of the airline’s biggest markets.
“Anyone New Jerseyan will know the Clinton mill is on this side. So, all the residents of Clinton and Warren County have just been going nuts over this design, seeing their iconic home landmark there. I wanted to pay homage to it,” Antonelli says.
Antonelli is a junior at Ringling College of Art and Design in Florida. But she first got into art in grade school, taking classes at the Hunterdon Art Museum, which is right near the old Red Mill.
“Everything has come full circle now. Because we would sit outside and draw the Red Mill as part of class and now here it is on this scale. I knew immediately I wanted to include it in this design,” she says.
Antonelli says that her piece is all about connecting the people of New York and New Jersey.
The plane was expected to take off Wednesday night taking passengers from Newark to Manchester, England.
