More than 50 people rallied Saturday near New Rochelle High School to demand that city police and officials do more after two recent stabbings involving high school students.
A variety of speakers were invited to explain how they are participating in the process.
The rally at Huegenot Park was held following two stabbings last month involving New Rochelle High School students, one of which was fatal.
New Rochelle High School senior class president Ever Mac says student leaders are meeting to discuss ideas.
"How we can kind of contribute to the climate in a beneficial way?" she asked.
Community activists say they believe programs that help prevent violence between students are also needed in addition to police involvement.
"We also need to try and figure out what are the barriers to a healthy participatory life for all of our kids, regardless of zip code," says Lisa Burton, of the New Rochelle Coalition Against Violence.
At the end of the rally, community members voted on what issue they believe needs the most attention. Gang violence won the most votes.
"We chose to raise our families here," says organizer Sarah Langlois. "There is a lot of good in the community. We don't want to be afraid. We don't want to have to move and a lot of people are talking about moving."
