The man accused of striking five Boy Scouts, killing one of them, while driving drunk Sunday afternoon is taking full responsibility for his actions.
Police say the Scouts were walking on the shoulder of David Terry Road in Manorville when they were struck by Thomas Murphy, of Holbrook.
Andrew McMorris, 12, a seventh-grader at Prodell Middle School in Shoreham, died from his injuries.
The four injured Scouts ranged in age from 12 to 16 years old.
After a court hearing for Murphy was adjourned, Murphy’s lawyer Stephen McCarthy read a statement:
"I, Thomas Murphy, want to offer my deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and loved ones of Andrew McMorris. I take responsibility for my role in this tragic accident that occurred on Sept. 30, 2018, which resulted in the death of a wonderful boy.”
The statement goes on to say that Murphy will cooperate “fully with the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office during their investigation into this tragic accident.”
The case, which is expected to go to a grand jury, was adjourned until Nov. 7.
