The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety finds that 83 percent of seniors say they have never talked with family or friends about retiring as drivers.

AAA reports that senior citizen drivers were involved in more than 52,000 crashes statewide last year, leading to more than 200 fatalities and nearly 20,000 injuries – the most in a decade.

AAA spokesperson Robert Sinclair says retirement from driving can be a gradual process. He says many seniors are pretty good at recognizing at least some of their limitations.

News 12 was at Green Acres Senior Center in Valley Stream, where some residents were still confident in their abilities as drivers.

“I like to drive. I'd rather go by myself than go with someone else,” said Hedy Daigger.

AAA says its best to start early and talk often with seniors about their plans to retire from the road. They say the goal is to make sure facts and logic drive the discussion, not hurt feelings or pride.
