4 nabbed in alleged Airmont robbery, high-speed chase
Four people are in custody after allegedly robbing an Airmont eatery Sunday then leading throngs of police on a chase that ended in New Jersey.
Police say the four men knocked at the back door of an Applebee's on Route 59 early in the morning. The robbers allegedly flashed a gun, pushed their way in, tied up workers and robbed the place.
An employee was able to get free and call 911.
Police say they spotted the getaway vehicle, but the suspects wouldn't stop. Instead, the men allegedly led more than 12 law enforcement agencies on a high-speed chase that ended with them stuck on the George Washington Bridge in New Jersey after they struck another vehicle.
According to authorities, one suspect jumped from the second level to the first level of the bridge. He is now in critical condition. Another suspect allegedly attempted to steal someone's vehicle on the bridge, but was struck by a Fort Lee cruiser instead.
The other two suspects surrendered without incident.
The four men will be arraigned in New Jersey on felony charges of eluding police. Authorities say after the bandits face charges in New Jersey, they will be returned to New York to face felony robbery charges.
Their identities are not being released. Investigators are trying to determine whether the men had a real weapon in their possession, but police say they did recover a toy gun.
