4 charged in baseball prospect Mike Nolan slaying
Authorities announced the arrests Wednesday of two teens and two men in connection with the shooting death of Yonkers professional baseball prospect Mike Nolan.
Acting Westchester District Attorney James McCarty identified the suspects as Nashaun Hunter, 17; Darren Dawson, 18; and Tejmitra Singh, 23, all of the Bronx; as well as Garth O'Neil Cole, a 22-year-old from Mount Vernon.
Prosecutors said the suspects pulled their vehicle alongside Nolan, 23, at a Burger King on Central Park Avenue in Yonkers in September. Hunter allegedly fired six shots, one of which struck Nolan in the head.
"He was taken from us for no reason whatsoever," said Donna Nolan, the victim's mother. "I guess in time we'll learn to live with it, but I will never accept it. They go to jail. I still don't get my son back."
Nolan was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where he remained in a coma until he was declared dead Oct. 9. Police said the shooting was in retaliation for events at a drag race that became physical, although investigators aren't sure whether Nolan, who had been drafted in 2014 by the Oakland Athletics, was the intended target.
Police tracked the suspects through social media and interviewed more than 20 people during their investigation.
Hunter faces a count of second-degree murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. The other suspects are each charged with first-degree assault and weapons charges.
The murder charge includes a possible sentence of 25 years to life in prison. The assault charges have a maximum sentence of 25 years, and the weapons charges carry 15-year sentences.
The four suspects are scheduled to again appear in court on Thursday.
