2 cops, EMT last to see immigrant before death testify
The police officers and paramedic to first see a man on the side of a road before his death testified Tuesday in White Plains at the trial of a former cop accused in the crime.
North Castle Police Sgt. James Thomas and Officer Douglas Gellard told the court that Rene Perez reeked of alcohol and had a weak pulse when they found him lying on the side of a Bedford Road in April 2007.
Paramedic Danielle Garabito testified that Perez's blood pressure was dropping and that he was cold, but she said he wasn't bleeding externally. Garabito also noted that Perez smelled of alcohol.
According to the paramedic, she saw Perez in the ER at Northern Westchester Hospital 20 times over the past six years. However, she testified that it was too dark for her to initially tell she was treating Perez that night.
Members of the Bedford Police Department, who reportedly had past encounters with a drunken Perez, are expected to take the stand next.
George Bubaris resigned from the Mount Kisco Police Department shortly after he was charged with second-degree manslaughter, unlawful imprisonment and official misconduct. Bubaris allegedly beat Perez and dumped him in another jurisdiction.
