At least a dozen beaches at the Jersey Shore remain closed due to high levels of bacteria.
Officials are blaming the large amount of rain that New Jersey has seen over the past few days. Beaches have been closed since Monday.
They include beaches in Belmar, Brigantine, Loch Arbour, Pine Beach, Seagirt, Spring Lake and Seaside Heights.
Although health officials are warning against swimming when the bacteria levels are so high, News 12 New Jersey found many beachgoers who say that the warnings won’t stop them.
“The water is so beautiful. The day is so beautiful, so you can’t resist to go into the water. I mean, that’s my mentality. Basically I try to enjoy the water,” says Marlboro resident Tia Want.
“Children are in the water. The birds don’t seem too disturbed, so the water seems pretty normal,” says New Yorker Clemence Michallon.
Temperatures across New Jersey reached the low-90s Wednesday.
But since the beaches were officially closed, no lifeguards were on duty. Officials say that it is very unsafe to swim in the ocean if it is unguarded.
The beaches will remain closed until the bacteria levels decline.
