3ds agoThe Yorktown Town Board has officially agreed to protect historic elements of the Underhill Farm property.
The Yorktown Heritage Preservation Commission has been advocating for Underhill Farm to be designated as a historic landmark after a mixed-use project was approved for the property in July.
The approved project would allow the site to be used as a residential community for seniors, including 48 townhouses, a 32-unit condominium building, and a mixed-use building consisting of 68 apartments. However, the farm, located at 370 Underhill Avenue, has deep roots in Yorktown the 18th century.
The approval comes just two weeks after the board unanimously rejected a proposal to designate it as a historic landmark, citing private property rights and financial reasons.
"In municipal government, there's one way to pay for it. You raise taxes. The other way is you increase revenue. And so, this project has a lot of benefits where it's going to increase the revenue to this town," says Yorktown Councilman Sergio Esposito.
The plans also include details to restore the historic home that sits there. News 12 is working to learn more about what exactly will happen to that mixed-use project now.
