NYSEG wants to raise its rates, but their customers are not going down without a fight.

Angry gas and electric customers surrounded Yorktown Town Hall Thursday night with hopes of stopping the fare hike. Longtime customers like Joan Brodsky say frequent outages and poor response times have gotten worse.

"It was a problem periodically, there was always problems but they were minor and they were able to solve the problem and you spoke to a person who cared," says Brodsky.

But NYSEG wants to raise rates 15% for electricity, costing an average homeowner about $11 per month. A proposed gas rate hike would also cost on average $2 more per month.

NYSEG told News 12 it needs the money to cut down trees and branches that would otherwise knock out power.

"The Public Service Commission now needs to make sure NYSEG goes on improving, and if they do that then maybe we'll get what we paid for," says Lewisboro Town Supervisor Peter Parsons.

State law says that the PSC can either reject, approve or modify NYSEG's proposal after hearing testimony from the people who live there.

If approved, the new rates would take effect in April 2020.
