Yorktown officials are proposing a plan to revitalize the struggling downtown business sector.
The plan was announced Thursday in front of the former Food Emporium off Downing Drive. The storefront has been vacant for three years.
Yorktown Supervisor Michael Grace says he is hoping to introduce tax incentives to the current landlords of properties like the Food Emporium that will hopefully offset the cost of renovating them and pass the savings onto the tenants.
"With the program, we hope to start to see these things go away," he said. "In other words, if the landlord wants to make an investment in the structure to repurpose that, he will get an abatement on the additional assessment renovating and filling it."
The plan is in the early stages, but Grace hopes to put the proposal in front of the town board sometime after this year's election.
